Install the Impressario software onto your system. 2. Enter a valid FLEXlm software license for Impresario if you will be using the Host-based PostScript interpreter. All InkJet printers, HP Non-PostScript capable LaserJet printers, and HP DesignJet plotters use the Host-based PostScript interpreter and will require the optional license. 3. Connect the printer or scanner to the system. 4. Configure the Impressario software for use with the printer or scanner. IMPORTANT: If your printer or scanner is already installed, you must delete and reinstall it using the printer manager or scanner manager to take advantage of new features in this latest release of Impressario (see below for more information on how to do this easily). The print server and all client systems should delete and reinstall their printers (server first). An exception are printer clients running IRIX 4.*. IRIX 4.* users should not delete and reinstall existing printers. The next three sections describe these steps in more detail. 2.4.1 _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n All of the subsystems for Impressario can be installed using IRIX. You do not need to use the miniroot. Refer to the _I_R_I_X _A_d_m_i_n: _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _a_n_d _L_i_c_e_n_s_i_n_g guide for complete installation instructions. After software installation you must restart the File Manager in order for the file typing rules installed by Impressario to be read by the system. To restart the File Manager log out of the system and then log back in. - 8 - 2.4.2 _H_a_r_d_w_a_r_e__I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n If you are connecting a printer or scanner to your workstation, follow the instructions for installing the device that are provided by the manufacturer. If you find that a LaserJet printer is not printing a page due to memory limitations you can try setting RESRCSAVE=OFF using the printer's front panel (this is found under the MEM CONFIG MENU option). Note that some models of LaserJet printers do not support this (notably those that do not have a front panel display). HP LaserJet 4 users should make sure the paper size in use is set on the printer using the printer's front panel settings. The same may apply to older LaserJet III and II models. 2.4.3 _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_i_n_g__t_h_e__I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o__S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e Impressario printer software is configured using the Printer Manager tool. The Printer Manager can be accessed from the Toolchest System menu, from the System Manager or from a shell (type "printers" from a shell). See the _P_e_r_s_o_n_a_l _S_y_s_t_e_m _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for details on installing printers. Impressario scanner software is configured using the Scanners tool that comes with Impressario. The Scanners tool can be accessed from either the System Manager or a shell (type "scanners" from a shell). See the _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o _U_s_e_r'_s _G_u_i_d_e for details on installing scanners. Impressario includes support for the following printers: +o Apple LaserWriter Plus, II, IINT, IINTX, IIf, and IIg. Note: This list is the same as Impressario 1.2 -- there are no new Apple LaserWriter drivers for Impressario 2.*. The above Apple LaserWriter printers must be connected to the system using a serial port. Additional PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files for Apple printer models Personal NT, Select 310, 320, Select 360f, Select 610, Pro 810, 12/600 PS, 16/600 PS, 16/600 PS-J, NTR, Pro 600 and Pro 630 are available in the impr_print.sw.ppd_unsupported subsystem. See the file /var/spool/lp/PPD_untested/README after installing the impr_print.sw.ppd_unsupported images. The PPD files for these printers have not been tested by SGI - 9 - and may or may not work with the above printers. The SGI PPD based driver supports a parallel port or network connection to the printer (serial and AppleTalk connections are not supported). +o Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500C, 550C, 560C, 600C, 660C, 850C, 855C, 1200C, 1600C and PaintJet XL300. The DeskJet 500C, 550C, 560C and XL300 must be connected to the system using a parallel port. The remaining DeskJet printers can be connected via a parallel port or an HP JetDirect network adaptor (except for the JetDirect 150X which does not support TCP/IP protocols). All of the above DeskJet driver require the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. +o Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 1200C/PS, 1600CM and XL300 PostScript. The above HP printers have built-in PostScript capabilities and are supported without requiring the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. +o Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 650C and 750C plotters. The above DesignJet drivers require the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. An exception is if the driver is placed into Pass-Thru mode (in which case the file is passed directly to the plotter "as is" with no additional processing on the SGI). You can use the Pass-Thru mode to send HPGL files generated by CAD applications directly to the plotter. The DesignJet 650C and 750C can be connected via a parallel port or an HP JetDirect network adaptor (except for the JetDirect 150X which does not support TCP/IP protocols). A 755C can also be driven with the 750C driver. +o Hewlett-Packard DesignJet 650C/PS, 700/PS, 750C/PS, 755CM, The above HP plotters have built-in PostScript capabilities and are supported without requiring the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. - 10 - +o Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIP, IIP+, III, IIIP, 4, 4P, 4L, 4V, 4Plus, 4Si, 5L, 5P, 5N, 5Si, 6L, 6P. The above HP non-PostScript capable printers require the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. The HP LaserJet IIP, IIP+, III, IIIP, 4, 4L, 5L and 6L must be connected to the system using a parallel port. The other LaserJet printers can be connected via a parallel port or an HP JetDirect network adaptor (except for the JetDirect 150X which does not support TCP/IP protocols). +o HP LaserJet 6MP PS, 5M PS, 5MP PS, 5Si/5SiMX PS, 4/4M PS, 4ML PostScript, 4MP PS, 4/4M Plus PS, 4Si/4SiMX PS, 4V/4MV PostScript, Color LaserJet PS, IIISi PostScript, ColorLaserJet 5/5M PS, CopyJet M PS, III PostScript Cartridge, IIID PostScript Cartridge, IIIP PostScript Cartridge, IID PostScript Cartridge, IIP PostScript Cartridge, The above HP printers have built-in PostScript capabilities (or an optional cartridge add-on for PostScript capabilities) and are supported without requiring the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. Example: "5Si/5SiMX PS" means a 5SiMX or a 5Si with the optional HP PostScript cartridge. The above printers can be connected via a parallel port or an HP JetDirect network adaptor (except for the JetDirect 150X which does not support TCP/IP protocols). NOTE: HP markets a LaserJet 5 and a Color LaserJet 5. They are not the same printer. The Color LaserJet 5 is not supported unless it has PostScript capability (the ColorLaserJet 5M includes PostScript; the ColorLaserJet 5 can be upgraded with a PostScript cartridge from HP). +o Epson Color Stylus, Color Stylus Pro and Color Stylus Pro XL. All Epson Stylus printers must be connected to the system using a parallel port. The above non-PostScript capable printers require the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter. +o Lexmark Optra LaserPrinter, Optra Plus LaserPrinter, Optra C, Optra N, Optra S, Optra SC, 4039 and Color - 11 - Jetprinter 4079 plus. All supported Lexmark printers can be connected via a parallel port or via the printers' network adaptor (the network adaptor is optional on some Lexmark printers). Lexmark has additional Impressario 1.2 and 2.* drivers available for other Lexmark printers. Contact Lexmark for additional information. All Lexmark printers include built-in PostScript capability -- the optional Impressario host-based Adobe PostScript interpreter is not required for Lexmark printers +o Impressario includes a Generic Color PostScript printer driver that converts files to Color PostScript and sends the PostScript file to the printer. The Generic Color PostScript driver supports the parallel port and HP JetDirect network adaptors (except for the JetDirect 150X which does not support TCP/IP protocols). Other network adaptors can be used as long as they use TCP port 9100 as their data port (HP JetDirect network adaptors use TCP port 9100 (except the JetDirect 150X) and most newer printers will also use the same port number). +o Impressario 2.2.* includes a new PPD (PostScript Printer Description) based driver. Using a printer vendor supplied PPD file the PPD driver can generate a GUI interface allowing various printer features to be used. PPD files can be found at printer vendor web sites and FTP sites. Many vendors have a large collection in a single directory that can be down loaded. One notable exception is HP. HP PPDs are not available in a single location -- they are incorporated into HP supplied printer drivers. For this reason you may have to contact HP to get a PPD file for a particular printer. A large collection of PPDs for multiple vendors is available from Adobe's FTP site at ftp.adobe.com. Many of these files are already available on the SGI system and can be found in the impr_print.sw.ppd_unsupported subsystem. These are PPD files that SGI has not yet tested. They may or may not work with the Impressario PPD driver. These files are provided as a convenience for users who would otherwise have to get them from an FTP site (after installing the impr_print.sw.ppd_unsupported images see the README - 12 - file in the /var/spool/lp/PPD_untested directory for more information). Also see the README in /var/spool/lp/PPD_model. In general, if your printer has built-in PostScript capability and the printer vendor can supply a valid PPD file for the printer then you should be able to use the printer with Impressario. Note that all existing printers, including networked printers, must be deleted and reinstalled using the Printer Manager after you update to the latest Impressario software. Remote printers can be reinstalled automatically with the rrrreeeeiiiinnnnssssttttaaaallllllllpppprrrr((((1111MMMM)))) shell script. An exception are systems running IRIX 4.*. IRIX 4.* users should not delete and reinstall existing printers. Impressario includes support for the following scanners: +o Hewlett-Packard ScanJet IIc, IIcx, 3C, 4C, 4P, 5p. Note: The IIc and IIcx are supported with a maximum resolution of 800 DPI. The 3C and 4C are supported with a maximum resolution of 1200 DPI. The 4P and 5p are supported with a maximum resolution of 600 DPI. (These are the maximum interpolated resolutions supported by these scanners.) +o Ricoh FS2. The older Ricoh FS1 scanner is no longer supported starting with Impressario 2.1.2. +o Sharp JX320, JX325, JX330, JX600, JX610 The MicroTek ScanMaker 600 ZS driver found in Impressario 1.2 is no longer available. The Epson GT-6000 driver found in Impressario 1.2 is no longer available. 2.5 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s Your workstation must be running IRIX release 6.2 in order to use Release 2.2.2 of Impressario. Your workstation must be running IRIX release 6.3 in order to use Release 2.2.3 of Impressario. Your workstation must be running IRIX release 6.4 in order to use Release 2.2.4 of Impressario. Your workstation must be running IRIX release 6.5 in order to use Release 2.2.5 of Impressario. - 13 - To determine the IRIX system release, use the command: uuuunnnnaaaammmmeeee ----aaaa The Impressario Adobe PostScript interpreter uses a FLEXlm node locked license. Many HP and all Epson printer drivers require the PostScript interpreter (see the previous section "Configuring the Impressario Software" for details on which drivers require the Impressario Adobe PostScript interpreter). _v_s_t_i_f_f, a document previewer, also requires the Impressario Adobe PostScript interpreter. gscan, Impressario filters, the developers kit and all printer drivers that use a printer's built-in PostScript interpreter do not require the FLEXlm node locked license to work. Impressario is distributed WITHOUT the FLEXlm node locked license. A license must be purchased to use the Adobe PostScript interpreter for these cases. Note that impr_rip and impr_rip_printers subsystems are not installed by default (impr_rip contains the PostScript interpreter and impr_rip_printers contains the HP and Epson drivers that use the PostScript interpreter). You may wish to install the impr_rip and impr_rip_printers subsystems when you acquire the FLEXlm node locked license. You can use the License Manager to enter the Impressario license. Type the command ////uuuussssrrrr////eeeettttcccc////LLLLiiiicccceeeennnnsssseeeeMMMMaaaannnnaaaaggggeeeerrrr to start the license manager (or start the License Manager using the Toolchest System pull-down menu). Permanent and Evaluation licenses are available from the SGI web server at http://www.sgi.com/Products/license.html or send a blank email message to: license@sgi.com. In North America, Silicon Graphics' customers may request Permanent licenses by sending a facsimile (FAX) to: (415) 390-0537 or by calling our technical support hotline 1-800-800-4SGI. If you are Outside of North America or you are not a Silicon Graphics support customer then contact your local support provider. If the license has expired a message is printed on the printer when you try to print. This message is in the file ////uuuussssrrrr////lllliiiibbbb////pppprrrriiiinnnntttt////ddddaaaattttaaaa////ppppssssrrrriiiipppp____eeeexxxxppppiiiirrrreeeedddd____mmmmssssgggg. If the license will expire any time in the next 90 days a warning message is printed on the banner page. IMPORTANT: This message is only printed if you have removed and replaced the printer (which installs the Impressario 2.* driver). Printer drivers written for Impressario 1.2 will not print any warning messages since these drivers could not have anticipated the need to check for a valid license. You will always see messages in the /var/spool/lp/log file from psrip(1) if a license has expired. - 14 - The minimum recommended system for use with Impressario 2.* is an R4K Indigo with 32 MBytes of memory. However, a faster system and additional memory are highly recommended for printer servers. Consider adding an additional 4 MBytes of memory and 5 MBytes of disk space for each additional printer that will be controlled by the print server (this applies if you will be running multiple printers at the same time from the same print server). A number of Impressario subsystems require that other software subsystems be installed on the system. The following table lists the prerequisite subsystems for each Impressario subsystem. Note that the prerequisite subsystems may be other Impressario subsystems or subsystems in the base IRIX release. To use this table effectively, select the Impressario subsystems you wish to install and read the prerequisite subsystems. Use the _v_e_r_s_i_o_n_s(_1_M) command to determine whether the prerequisite subsystems are installed and use the Software Manager to install any missing subsystems. Impressario subsystems not listed in the table below do not have prerequisites. - 15 - __________________________________________________________________________ Impressario Subsystem Prerequisite ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ impr_base.books.Impr_UG insight_base.sw.eoe __________________________________________________________________________ impr_base.man.impr insight_base.sw.eoe __________________________________________________________________________ impr_base.sw.impr print.sw.desktop cms_eoe.sw.cms il_eoe.sw.c++ __________________________________________________________________________ impr_print.sw.colorps impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_print.sw.laserjetPS impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_print.sw.laserwriter impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_print.sw.lexmark impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_print.sw.ppd_unsupported impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_rip.sw.impr dps_eoe.sw.dpsfonts __________________________________________________________________________ impr_rip_printers.sw.designjet impr_base.sw.impr impr_rip.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_rip_printers.sw.deskjet impr_base.sw.impr impr_rip.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_rip_printers.sw.epson impr_base.sw.impr impr_rip.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_rip_printers.sw.laserjet impr_base.sw.impr impr_rip.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_scan.sw.hp impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_scan.sw.ricoh impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ impr_scan.sw.sharpscsi impr_base.sw.impr __________________________________________________________________________ TTTTAAAABBBBLLLLEEEE 1111.... Impressario Prerequisites 2.6 _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y Impressario 2.2.* is backwards compatible with Impressario 2.1 and 2.0. Impressario 2.2.* is backwards compatible with Impressario 1.2 with the following exceptions: +o The CTR filetype rules are no longer used (see the routeprint(1) man page) and the file /usr/lib/filetype/workspace.ctr will not be found on IRIX 6.3 (or higher) systems. Most drivers written for Impressario 1.2 check for the existence of this file and will disable the lp scheduler if it is not found. See Chapter 5, "Known problems and Workarounds" for a workaround. - 16 - +o IRIX 6.2 (or higher) will not run COFF binaries so any Impressario driver that uses COFF binaries will not run on IRIX 6.2 (or higher). All SGI supplied impressario drivers are ELF and will run on IRIX 6.2 (or higher). Third party impressario drivers may contain COFF binaries. +o SRSPrint for Impressario from SRS Imaging contains COFF binaries. You can use updated Genicom drivers for the SRS printer (see next item). +o Genicom GenicomPrint 1.1 for Impressario 1.1 and GenicomPrint 1.2 for Impressario 1.1 from Genicom contain COFF binaries. Contact Genicom for updated drivers. +o Tektronix _P_h_a_s_e_r_P_r_i_n_t _f_o_r _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o _1._0 contains COFF binaries and also uses the obsoleted chunky data format (see next item). As of this writing Tektronix has said they will not be supporting Impressario 2.*. If you are using _P_h_a_s_e_r_P_r_i_n_t _f_o_r _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o _1._0 you should not update the system to IRIX 6.2 (or higher). +o The _S_e_i_k_o_P_r_i_n_t _f_o_r _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o _1._1 driver for Seiko Professional ColorPoint printer contains COFF binaries and will not run under IRIX 6.2 (or higher). Seiko will not make updated drivers available. If you are using _S_e_i_k_o_P_r_i_n_t _f_o_r _I_m_p_r_e_s_s_a_r_i_o _1._1 you should not update the system to IRIX 6.2 (or higher). +o ppppssssrrrriiiipppp no longer supports the chunky format. +o ppppssssrrrriiiipppp is now based on the Adobe CPSI PostScript interpreter (starting with Impressario 2.0). Impressario 1.2 ppppssssrrrriiiipppp was based on an Adobe Display PostScript interpreter. There may be slight differences in output between these two PostScript interpreters. The differences have no effect when ppppssssrrrriiiipppp is used to drive a printer using an Impressario driver. There may be differences if ppppssssrrrriiiipppp is used to output to a file. Note that Adobe restricts the usage of ppppssssrrrriiiipppp to a selected list of printers and output to file is not supported. If you setup an IRIX 4.* client to an Impressario 2.1.* server the options panel will only be seen on the 4.* client for the following drivers: Apple Laserwriter, HP XL-300 and - 17 - LaserJet II, IIP+, IIIP, III, 4L and 4. For all others, the options panel will not be available.
